The Sydney Coliseum Theatre

The Challenge

The Sydney Coliseum Theatre was constructed as an extension of West HQ’s existing entertainment precinct. The building features a multi mode auditorium along with three foyers, seven bars, multiple entertaining areas, a VIP room, large rehearsal room and an onsite commercial kitchen. This flexible venue can accommodate 2,200 for a concert, 2000 people as a conventional lyric theatre or 600 people for a banquet. The project creates a striking architectural landmark with an iconic form and a new cultural destination for Western Sydney.

Our Approach

Due to the complex form of the building, creative solutions were required to ensure efficient and safe construction. The whole installation sequence was carefully planned, with safety the number one priority. Our role was required to supply and install approximately 23,000m2 of formwork including consultation with designers to complete the formwork design for the complex nature of the structure.

Due to the highly complex & detailed nature of the project it was very important to have a highly skilled & experienced supervisor & team on the project. For this reason we selected one of our longest standing site formans who has battled with success some of Calcono’s largest complex projects throughout its years. The site foreman was included in the careful selection of the team.

Calcono utilized its Peri Trio Jump Form system to form the double lift core. This was pushed ahead of the rest of the project to not cause delay to the other more intricate areas of the job. The remaining formwork elements were formed with traditional formwork as other formwork systems where not appropriate for the highly architectural finishes. A particular challenging area was the tiered seating for the auditorium.

Outcome

The Sydney Coliseum Theatre was completed successfully and opened its doors in December 2019 just in time for Grammy and ARIA award-winning artist Keith Urban to perform. Successful collaboration between Calcono & Hansen Yuncken play a big part in this success. Calcono look forward to working on future projects with HY.
