Gunyama Park Aquatic and Recreation Centre

The Challenge

The project is situated within the City of Sydney’s new Green Square precinct. Once complete, Gunyama will be the largest pool complex to be built in the city since the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games. The main works consist

  • A 50m heated outdoor pool set within a larger beach pool;
  • 25m heated indoor and leisure pool;
  • Skate bowl and fitness training circuit; and
  • Multipurpose sports field gym, cafe and crèche.

Formwork of over 13,000m2 was required for all of the above elements. Particularly challenging was the forming of the pool walls & other architecturally curved walls spaced out over the whole site. Also a large portion of the concrete elements are exposed so achieving a quality high class formwork finish was hugely important.

Builder: CPB Contractors               Contract Value: $2.9M
Completion Date: 2020

Our Approach

Due to the highly complex & detailed nature of the project it was very important to have a highly skilled & experienced supervisor & team on the project. For this reason we selected one of our longest standing site formans who has battled with success some of Calcono’s largest complex projects throughout its years. The site foreman was included in the careful selection of the team.

Particular attention was focused with the design of formwork. A high level of consultation with CPB & its designers was undertaken to complete the formwork design for all elements of the project.

All of the works on site were completed using conventional & traditional formwork resources. Consistent consultation with site surveys was undertaken to ensure the accuracy of the Olympic pool walls.

Outcome

We are proud to have been involved in such a unique & high profile project with CPB & the City of Sydney. The finishes achieved are a clear indication of the expertise of Calcono’s team members & the passion that 30 years in the industry bring.
